Summer Enrichment Program for Death Valley Unified School District

A total of 17 children and 9 adult family members from Shoshone, Tecopa, and Charleston View participated overall.

4 Play Days at Tecopa Francis Elementary School , July 7 & 21, August 4 & 11

Field Trip #1: July 28th- Leids Discovery Children’s Museum and Bonnie Springs State Park

12 children and 6 adults participated in this trip. Everyone greatly enjoyed all aspects. Bottled water, granola bars and cheese sticks were served on the bus during the three hour drive in. We began at the museum by eating a lunch together, provided by the program. Submarine sandwiches, chips, and juice were served in the museum dining room. Two teen-aged docents then gave us a brief tour of the museum, and we spent the rest of the time exploring all the 260 hands-on exhibits at our own pace.  There was something for everyone, whether walking in real magnetic moon boots, donning a range of costumes and performing on stage, encasing yourself in a giant soap bubble, creating a tornado, or a giving a music-activated light show. After reboarding the bus, each child received a gift bag of small toys purchased at the museum.

On the way home, we stopped at the Bonnie Springs State Park for some physical activity before the long ride home. We had a snack of fruit and cookies, and Kimo Urmeneta led everyone aged 1 to 15 in some rousing games on the playing field. We had brought a selection of balls for that purpose, chosen by Dylan and Katelyn.  The enormous grass field, abundant bird life and cool breeze was enjoyed by all. Parents were able to talk and network among themselves during this time as well.

Field Trip #2: August 18- Las Vegas Natural History Museum and Burger King

13 children and 7 adults participated in this trip, with quite a few different people than from the first trip. Most absences were due to conflicts with summer family vacations.  Bottled water, granola bars and cheese sticks were served on the bus. Upon arrival at the museum, we were given an extensive docent tour, which was well paced for our varied age group.  We also allowed for an extra half our for individual families to revisit areas of special interest to them. The museum also had a great playground outdoors, which helped us transition back to the bus.

We reconvened at the Charleston/Decatur Burger King for a donated (children’s) lunch, organized by George Gilbert of Tecopa. He and Arlene were present as well.  This program paid for the adult lunches, and then the playroom was greatly enjoyed by all.
