Lake Mead & Hoover Dam Family Tour
|
|
Family Fun Day summer enrichment program brings families from four remote
Inyo County communities together for networking and educational fun. |
| What’s more precious
than water, for kids growing up in the Death Valley area? A whole lot of
water, and a cruise boat to go with it, according to the happy participants
of the Death Valley Unified School District’s annual Family Fun Day. On
Tuesday, July 25th, 26 family members boarded a school bus and
traveled to Lake Mead for a day of adventure, the largest man-made reservoir
in the United States. (Ten more were unable to attend, due to last minute
circumstances). |
 |
| First stop was the
Hoover Dam, where the Discovery Tour offered a video overview, followed by a
tour of a generator room, tunnels, and various display and overlook areas.
They learned amazing facts about the volume of water and electricity
provided by the dam’s resources. Following a picnic lunch on board the air
conditioned bus at an overlook high above Lake Mead, the group boarded Lake
Mead Cruise’s three deck stern-wheeler, the Desert Princess, for an hour and
a half on the southern end of Lake Mead. From here, they viewed the Hoover
Dam from the rear “working end” and enjoyed spectacular views of parts of
the lake only accessible from the water. |
 |
| Participants came
from Stewart Valley, Shoshone, Tecopa, and Charleston View, traveling as
much as five hours each way. For the sixth consecutive summer, funds
provided by Inyo County’s Children’s Services Commission were used to
provide a summer enrichment program for southeast Inyo’s children and
families, in an area where children in the same school class can live over
100 miles apart and have very few opportunities for family interaction.
Various agencies have kept the tradition alive, the most recent being the
Death Valley Unified School District for the last two years. Hummingbird
Family Resources, Inc. board members donated their time to organize the
activities and escort children whose parents were unable to attend. |
