Something is thundering down the Old Spanish Trail through sleepy Tecopa, California, these days and it isn’t mule teams or cattle drovers. On holiday weekends like this one, thousands of recreational vehicles are heading from Las Vegas to the Dumont Dunes to join other off-road vehicle (ORV) enthusiasts for cookouts, competition riding and general fun. Many more are coming through Shoshone from Pahrump, or up Highway 127 from the south. According to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which oversees the area and collects a $20 user fee from every vehicle, up to 30,000 vehicles have attended some of the bigger three-day weekend events.
